Prayer in public worship has to strike a balance between being sufficiently down-to-earth and sufficiently inclusive. If the subject matter is too particular it will exclude those who don’t identify with the experience; if it’s too generalized it will fail to engage the congregation. One of the ways of dealing with this problem is to offer a broad category for prayer and then to particularize it. An alternative is to allow people to ‘fill in the blanks’. As ever, it’s very important to allow enough time for silent prayer and not to panic over the silence! Allowing enough time shows you mean business!…
