Prayer in public worship has to strike a balance between being sufficiently down-to-earth and sufficiently inclusive. If the subject matter is too particular it will exclude those who don’t identify with the experience; if it’s too generalized it will fail to engage the congregation. One of the ways of dealing with this problem is to offer a broad category for prayer and then to particularize it. An alternative is to allow people to ‘fill in the blanks’.
