The Fourth Sunday of Epiphany
Mark 1.21-28

Gaze on a classroom, when a new teacher arrives. The pupils are nervous but so is the teacher. It will only be a few moments before it is clear where the power lies. Can the teacher hold the attention of the class, or will the children begin to doodle, pulling faces at him and sending rude messages to each other behind his back?

Gaze at a new preacher, arriving in church. She mounts the steps into the pulpit and takes out her notes. How long will it be before the congregation begins to fidget and cough and look at their watches? Or will they soon be gripped by the presence of this speaker and the wisdom of her words? Will they have forgotten the sermon before they return home...
