John 20.19-31


Gaze on the faces of the disciples, their jaws clenched, eyes half shut, pictures of defeat. So far we have been gazing on expressions of fright and grief, of doubt and confusion. They’ve seen the stone rolled away, and they’ve seen the empty tomb, and they’ve heard the women’s ‘idle tale’. Can anything more happen to astonish them?

Gaze on this huddle of frightened men and women whispering in the dark, behind a shut and bolted door. Listen to the silence; there is no creak of a footstep on the stairs or whine of hinges as a door swings open...
