Proper 7

Mark 4: 35-41

Gaze on the sea in stormy weather. Hear the roar of the gale crashing against the sails at full stretch and the creak of the feeble wooden hull. Watch the disciples, bailing out in vain. The rain is lashing their faces, soaking their clothes. Hear the fear in their voices. Gaze on the tumult, the panic and confusion. Then let your eyes move to the stern, where the still figure of Jesus is reclining peacefully, as if he is dozing on a sunny afternoon in the garden. Place yourself somewhere in that boat. Feel its rocking movement, as it pitches into the waves higher than the tallest sail. How safe do you feel?...
