John 5.19-29

I spent two hours this morning reading part of my oldest son’s doctoral dissertation. It isn’t on a subject I know anything about, but I was checking to see if I could catch any last minute typographical mistakes, and to get the feel of how the sentences worked, and whether it all seemed to make sense.

We often talk about writing, since we both do quite a lot of it, and I realize that in an informal way he has been, as it were, unofficially apprenticed to me. He has watched me writing over the years; he has his own natural aptitude, and a different style as well as subject matter; but we both take quiet pleasure in working on things side by side. Simultaneously, my younger son is conducting a short-term project under my direction, and there the sense of apprenticeship is even more marked...
