The young student nervously approached the professor after the lecture. He’d been thinking for some while about doing graduate work after his degree, and this teacher’s lectures were the ones he’d most enjoyed. Could he perhaps have a brief chat?

The professor sat him down in his formidable study. Books lined the walls, papers filled the desk. Feeling very inadequate, the student explained rather lamely what he was interested in, what had excited him about the lectures, and how he’d like some advice about whether it would be good to go on to doctoral work. The professor asked some questions, gave a few suggestions, and then told the student to go to the faculty office and fill in the required form....
