My daughter and I still laugh about her seventh birthday.

It was a Sunday in February. The church we attended, in Canada where we lived then, held a cross-country ski day each year. People came to the morning service, stayed for soup in the church hall, and then set off in groups along different trails, graded according to whether they were fast, medium or slow. We joined the slow group, and very soon found ourselves in a very slow group consisting of just the two of us. She fell down in the soft snow about every thirty strides, and she loved every minute of it as I picked her up again and again, and we carried on...
