There’s a joyless religion that should be avoided like the plague. There’s a certain personality that obsesses with detail; it becomes preoccupied with rules and ritual; it prefers the letter of the law to the spirit of the law. Jesus clashed with this sort of person all the time. Religious regulations became an end in themselves rather than a means to bringing life: think of the Pharisees who objected to Jesus healing people on the day of rest because it looked like work. Jesus dealt with such killjoys by telling them that the Sabbath was made for the sake of humanity, not the other way around...
