Our preacher yesterday told us how two years ago she had married a man who was soon abusing her. So after a short while she had to decide to leave him, though it was enough time for her to be pregnant. Thus she soon found herself divorced, jobless, and a single parent. You might have thought she would be disillusioned with life and with God, but the text for her sermon came from Philippians 4, where Paul urges people not to worry or be anxious but to rejoice in God; then they will find that God’s peace reigns in their hearts. Our preacher is about to be ordained, though her ministerial assignment does not bring a salary with it, so she has to find a job, but she is confident that God will come through for her.
