I have just finished reading a fascinating wartime diary, written by an Anglican clergyman who was captured by the Germans in 1940 and spent the next five years in various prison camps, ministering as best he could to the thousands of men who were ill-fed, badly housed and prone to despair. I have learned many things from the book, not least a reminder to be grateful that my own generation, though we have faced many other problems, have at least been spared that kind of experience...
