The Third Sunday of Lent

John 2.13-22

Gaze on all that remains of the Temple in Jerusalem. Once a massive edifice with columns of white marble and gates of silver and gold, Herod’s monument was destroyed by the Romans, much as Jesus had predicted. But a fragment remains, which is the Western Wall. Rising 50 feet (15 metres) above the ground, its foundations date back to Solomon’s Temple and it is one of the retaining walls of the Temple Mount, now forbidden to the Jews.

Gaze on the Jewish men and women at prayer by this wall. They are weeping for the destruction of their Temple. Hear their lamentations, murmurs and whispers. See the slips of paper carrying private prayers posted between the cracks of the stone...
