Palm Sunday: The Liturgy of the Palms
Mark 11.1-11 or John 12.12-16
Gaze on donkeys plodding down arid hillsides in the Middle East or North Africa – they can still be seen today. At first they appear in the distance indistinguishable from the boulders – only their movement betrays them. They have no choice as to what they will carry in their giant panniers. They must carry rocks from the quarries to build houses or a mosque; they must carry wheat to the miller or peppers and olives to the market. They might be carrying a young bride on a long journey to an uncertain future. They do not ask questions or dispute the reason for their journey. They bear the load with patience and fortitude. They are set on a path and must complete it. Gaze on their perseverance...
