Proper 5

Mark 3: 20-35

Gaze on the family of Jesus, his mother Mary and his brothers, worried out of their wits by rumours reaching them high in their mountain home in Nazareth. Not only is Jesus upsetting the authorities, but he’s not even looking after himself. ‘He’ll make himself ill,’ you can hear Mary say. So they hurry down to Capernaum, a journey of 30 miles or 48 kilometres (probably carrying a pie and a cake, as mothers always do), to try to persuade him to tone down his message. They don’t want Jesus being branded as another Galilean rebel and Mary is determined to convince him to behave and, if possible, to take him back home with her. They arrive at the house where he is staying; they do not need to ask the way, because they are drawn by the hubbub and the crowds. They are tired but determined, and certain that Jesus will listen to them...
