The bishop sat at his desk and put his head in his hands. Another three letters had just arrived complaining at the way in which a particular parish had changed its style of music. The director of finance had just reported that unless people in the diocese gave a lot more money in the next six months they would have to close some churches and make two or three priests redundant. The police were investigating a church worker following some serious allegations. One of his closest colleagues had just had a major operation and was beginning two months’ sick leave. And now a telephone call had informed him that one of his own children was in trouble at school and he must come at once...
