It was a choice between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the second time of the summer
and Michael Bay’s movie, The Island. While the youngest member of our family wanted Willie
Wonka, the rest of us outvoted her.
The Island has some weaknesses, but, overall, it is an engaging movie. We meet Ewan McGregor
and Scarlett Johannson in an enclosed world, dreaming of winning the lottery, which would
enable them to go to the Island – the only part of the Earth still uncontaminated. However, soon,
Lincoln Six Echo – McGregor’s character – discovers that he is simply a clone, grown for spare
parts in case his ‘sponsor’ in the outside world is injured or becomes ill. The contaminated world
is simply a myth to keep the clones in their enclosed world, and going to the Island is not the
dream of freedom that they are told it is, but the nightmare of having your body parts harvested.
As we might expect from the director of Armageddon, the story is full of special effects and action
sequences, but it does pose some fascinating questions.
