The other day I tried to find myself on the internet. I felt rather guilty about doing such a thing
and was worried that someone might walk in and find me trying to find myself.
The words ‘David Wilkinson’ brought an amazing 162,000 hits. I was overwhelmed at how
important I seemed to be. That feeling was somewhat short-lived, however, as I began to realize
that I was lost in a sea of David Wilkinsons. David Wilkinson the novelist, not me. David
Wilkinson, the designer of the screw-cutting lathe in 1794, not me. Then there was David
Wilkinson the rugby player, the software designer, the masters student in robotics, the dentist, the
general manager of The Dorchester, the designer of virtual internet gravestones, and even the
David Wilkinson who had created his own web site because he was a disgruntled customer of his
local car firm. The first few pages of hits seemed oblivious to my meagre achievements or even
to my existence.
It was an important lesson in humility.
