Surveys always seem to produce surprising results. One concluded that four million Americans
claim that they have been abducted by aliens. This is surprising as it accounts for more
Americans than can do long division! I find myself asking the question, ‘Why would aliens want
four million Americans?’
Another survey was even more surprising. People were asked who they thought was the most
well known Christian in the public arena. Neither Billy Graham nor even the Pope topped the
poll. In fact, the most well-known Christian does not even exist. His name is Ned Flanders.
‘Neddie’, as his family affectionately call him, is the Simpson’s next-door neighbour. He is a
wonderful caricature of religion taken to the extreme, yet, for all his nerdy piety, he is a character
who is presented with some sympathy. While Homer’s beer gut pays tribute to the effect of
overconsumption of Duff by someone in their thirties, Ned is fit and looks far younger than his
age – 60. This he puts down to the three Cs – clean living, chewing thoroughly and a daily doss
of vitamin church.
