Arnold Schwarzenegger fulfilled his promise to ‘be back’ in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
Some have said, unkindly, that playing a cyborg killing machine is the role that best suits his
acting abilities, but it is certainly the role for which he is most famous. Terminator 3 continues
the story and Schwarzenegger’s earlier terminator again defends the rebel leader John Connor
against the most sophisticated cyborg killing machine yet – an indestructible female who is able to
change shape and disappear altogether.
James Cameron’s original Terminator movies not only made ‘I’ll be back’ the impression that
most of us have done really badly in recent decades but also introduced a pessimistic vision of the
future where war decimates millions and machines attempt to take over the world.
