Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, but Andy Warhol when he coined that phrase did not
expect the explosion of reality and interactive television that would allow so many people to
dream about living the dream.  
 
Popstars, Pop Idol, Fame Academy and The X Factor have been part of a phenomenally
successful TV genre that has launched the careers of Will Young and Liberty X, but do you still
remember David Sneddon and Gareth Gates?  Big Brother has given us Brian Dowling and Jade
Goody, as well as the non-celebrity Chantelle who, because she looked like celebrity Paris Hilton,
became a celebrity thanks to Celebrity Big Brother.  These programmes pick up on our longing
for fame, as if when we find it we will be able to sing, ‘I’m gonna live forever, I’m gonna learn
how to fly’!
 
For those of us who never will experience our own 15 minutes of fame, we are fascinated with
those who pursue it and then have to cope with the reality.
