My wife had eight viruses last week. It took me two days to get rid of them for her, even though
she should have been protected from them. Fortunately she was fine through all of this – it was
her computer that was sick.
After emerging from two days of battle with Sasser worms and sdot viruses, I marched into the
living room with that kind of male machismo which communicates ‘job well done’. I shared with
her my vast knowledge of how to avoid this in the future and how difficult, time-consuming and
draining the cleansing process had been. I then went to my office and found that my own
machine was suffering from its own case of winter flu. That’s the thing with viruses. No matter
how clever the anti-virus software is, there is always someone somewhere in the world who
produces something even more cunning in its ability to infect.
Fighting viruses is an ongoing challenge, whether it be in the virtual world or the evolving
biological world. In fact, it is not the only thing in the world which is like that.
