There are good things and bad things about having a 12-year-old son.  One of the good things is
that I have an excellent excuse for making regular visits to shops with shelves of video games.
The downside is that my son can beat me on any game of his or my choice.  Despite this, I am still
fascinated by such games.  I remember my amazement in my childhood at the early table tennis
game, with two paddles on the TV screen and a square ball pinging from one to the other.

Now, games take me into a different world.  For example, Halo 2 was one of the most eagerly
awaited games of all time and took 1.5 million orders before it was even available.  In fact, its
release had all the hallmarks of the opening of a major movie.  It has a fairly simple plot:
supersoldier defends Earth from aliens with an impressive array of weapons and challenges.  I
tried being the supersoldier once and, by the time I had worked out how to fire my gun, the world
had already been overrun and enslaved.

I can still dream of having another go and winning!  Perhaps that is why video games are so
popular.
