One of the experiments was to see the effect of chocolate on memory and mood.  We were set
tasks then given chocolate and asked to repeat similar tests.  ‘Binary Bill’, the mad scientist, then
informed us of the facts about different types of chocolate, its benefits and its dangers and, of
course, offered us more chocolate to sample these differences.  Finally, we were given
marshmallows to dip into a chocolate fountain, which, I am sure, will be on every street corner in
heaven.
 
What is our fascination with chocolate?  Many of us will identify with the mantra, ‘When the
going gets tough, I need more chocolate!’  Why, then, is chocolate a popular thing to link with
Lent?  Lasse Hallström’s movie Chocolat, based on the novel by Joanne Harris, tells a story that,
despite its Hollywood sentimentality, raises a number of questions about how Christians look at
the world.  A travelling single mother opens a chocolaterie in an outwardly religious French
village during Lent.  The mayor sees himself as the religious guardian of the village (indeed, in
the book, the mayor is also the priest).  While publicly labelled as sinful, chocolate becomes a
medium for healing and redemption.  It is a movie that asks questions about how religion can
sometimes devalue the gifts of the world.
