Why does it always happen at birthdays? I am desperate to find a skipping-rope. Not just any
skipping-rope. This skipping-rope counts the number of skips and also times you as you skip. A
birthday is fast approaching and I find myself searching the toy shops looking for this particular
skipping-rope requested by my daughter, Hannah, aged 8 and 350 days. In fact as I drove from
one toy shop to another, I couldn’t help smiling as, on the radio, U2 sang, ‘And I still haven’t
found what I’m looking for’!
At other times I am not smiling. In one toy shop, after searching all the shelves for some 20
minutes and concluding that skipping-ropes that flashed with lights were not appropriate, I saw
one of those rare sights – a shop assistant. Moving forward quickly, I cornered her and asked if
she knew whether her shop stocked my particular skipping-rope. She replied, ‘If we have it, it
will be in the toy section.’ Quickly she moved off.
