When Ray Charles sang, ‘I got a woman’, not only did he produce an enduring anthem, he also
exhibited a fundamental change in popular music. Charles, just like Elvis Presley, Little Richard,
Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly, had grown up in a church shaped by gospel music. Gospel
emerged from a combination of Celtic folk, English hymns and West African rhythms and had
God at its centre.
Charles moved gospel into soul by replacing love of God with love of a woman. He said, ‘I’d
always thought that the blues and the spirituals were close musically and emotionally. I was
happy to hook them up. I was determined to go all out and just be natural.’
Yet the relationship between gospel and rock and roll stayed close. Although Jerry Lee Lewis
was expelled as a student from the Southwestern Bible Institute in Texas for playing a boogie-
woogie version of the hymn ‘My God is real’ for morning assembly, the Beatles went off into
Eastern mysticism and there are perennial claims about Satan-worshipping heavy rock bands, God
is there in the background and, occasionally, right at the forefront.
