My childhood and teenage years were dominated by a stark contrast. Television was fun and
church was boring. Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
engaged my imagination and painted scenes that made me laugh out loud.
In The Hitchhiker’s Guide, the late Douglas Adams pushed the surreal to the limit with
improbability drive, Marvin the depressed robot and the restaurant at the end of the Universe. At
school, we knew his proof for the non-existence of God off by heart. It goes like this. The Babel

The argument is that God refuses to prove that he exists for that would deny faith. Hold on, says
man, the Babel fish is a dead give-away, it proves that you exist and therefore you don’t – QED.
Oh dear, says God, I hadn’t thought of that and promptly disappears in a puff of logic.
This of course, was another world to church. Stories in church were serious, predictable and all
with a moral point.
