Why is the superhero genre so popular?  It does seems to tap into our sense of needing a redeemer
– someone greater than ourselves who will deliver us from the mess that we have got ourselves
into.  Yet, such superheroes triumph through self-sacrifice.  
 
A book by two American academics suggests that the superhero story has grown specifically
because of the Christian foundations of our culture.  Now, that’s not to say that Jesus drove a
Batmobile and Peter should really have been called Robin.  What it is saying is that the belief in
someone who is greater than we are, yet like us, who comes to save us, has been embedded in our
culture because of Christianity.  Indeed, the trailers for the Superman movie use explicit biblical
concepts and language to talk of a special son sent to the Earth to save it.   
 
My own faith as a Christian is exactly about a hero who comes to save me.
