I love sport and can’t get enough of it.  When the Premier League season finishes, athletics and
cricket are there to keep me going.  Of course, I am an armchair participant, but it still dominates
my life.  Social and even church engagements have to be shaped around regular attendance at St
James’ Park to roar on my Newcastle heroes (and sometimes villains!).

Some of my religious friends are not too sure about this fanatical devotion.  Some object to the
large amounts of money involved in sport and argue that it could be put to better use.  I have some
sympathy with that.  Others argue that the competitive nature of sport is unhelpful for our society.
Still more feel uneasy, that somehow sport is trivial and unimportant to the religious life.

I believe, however, that God is into sport.  At this point I am not going to make the old joke that
Jesus loved rugby because he was good at conversions.  Nor do I mean that prayer can be
employed as a supersub when your team is 2-1 down.

It is much more fundamental than that.  The Christian faith rejoices in the physical as it is a gift
from God.
