I grew up in the 1960s, watching Star Trek and dreaming of being Captain Kirk. Indeed, as a five
year old, I remember stealing my mother’s powder compact, flicking the lid up and saying into it,
‘Beam me up, Scotty.’ Apart from covering the left side of my face with a coat of powder, it gave
me one of those dreams that, in the future, everyone would have their own communicator.
I never imagined that, within 40 years, everyone would have mobile phones and that even the
most imaginative ring tones would drive me crazy! Technology has developed at an amazing
pace and the third generation of mobile phones give us picture and video options in a way that is
beyond even Gene Roddenberry’s dreams.
Yet Roddenberry also dreamed of a world where technology and science would lead to a new
world order, where all people would be brought together. The trouble is that technological
advances have not made this happen. While the cold War may have ended, we still see wars
between nations and injustice and suffering within nations.
