The trouble with visiting family during the holidays is, often, their limited number of TV channels
and videos.  Indeed, recently at my mother-in-law’s, we had the choice of the joys of daytime
terrestrial television or the one video she had, which was Pearl Harbour.   
 
We opted for Pearl Harbour rather than feel guilty about our lack of commitment to the cash in
our attic, moving to the country or finding out what we should not be wearing.  It had been some
time since I had first seen Michael Bay’s movie, slaughtered at the time by the critics.  Actually, it
was not as bad as I remembered it to be – perhaps this time because I was watching it in the light
of a story I had heard only a week before.  
 
The previous week I was in the USA and found myself chatting to a man who had been at Pearl
Harbour on that ‘day of infamy’.  He told me the story of Jacob DeShazer.  DeShazer was a
bombardier in the Doolittle raid, which daringly bombed Tokyo in 1942.  Shot down during that
raid, he was beaten, tortured and starved as a war criminal.  ‘My hatred for the enemy nearly
drove me crazy,’ he said.  ‘My thoughts turned toward what I had heard about Christianity
changing hatred between human beings into real love.’
