The mechanistic view of the universe became very popular following the success of the theories
of Isaac Newton. In philosophy, it was used to deny that human beings could have free will, as
we were just part of the machine. In religion, it was used to say that God could not work miracles
by poking his fingers into the predictable universe.
Today, scientists are much more cautious. We now see the universe as a much more dynamic and
exciting place, where human freedom is real. Not everything is boring and predictable. Indeed,
for those who believe in a God who created such a universe, they would expect to see him at work
in not just the regularity of the world but also the unexpected and the surprising. In such a
universe, science no longer rules out miracles.
