A friend of mine recently asked a well-known evangelical leader if he had heard of the term ‘post-evangelical’. ‘Post-evangelical?’ the man replied, ‘Post-evangelical? Whatever is a post-evangelical? Surely, my boy, one either is an evangelical, or one is not an evangelical. Which is it?’ The plain fact of the matter is, though, that an increasing number of people see themselves as post-evangelical and many others identify with what being post-evangelical means, without actually using the term. Something is happening which is infinitely more significant than whether or not a bunch of evangelical ‘dropouts’ can find a constructive way forward. My thesis has been that this bigger something is linked to a fundamental cultural shift which is taking place in the Western world: a shift from the modern to the postmodern…
