By any standards, the period from the early 1980s to the mid- 1990s has been a remarkable period of transformation for British evangelicalism. In the years prior to this, the expectation of growth in most churches was minimal, media attention was virtually non-existent and the idea of making an impact on society was little more than a pipe dream. Today, not only has decline in church attendance apparently bottomed out, but many evangelical churches are growing dramatically and new churches are being planted regularly. High profile personalities in politics, entertainment and sport are continually ‘coming out’ about their faith, and the media pays increasing attention to evangelical and charismatic issues, as demonstrated by the considerable coverage given to the so-called ‘Toronto Blessing’.
