While we seem to be fascinated with the celebrity weddings featured in the pages of Hello!
Magazine, we also seem to be fascinated with the endless tabloid tales of celebrity adultery,
cheating, divorce and breakdown. Indeed, the breakdown of relationships – from Jude and Sienna
to Brad and Jennifer – even to Arsene and Sir Alex – is compulsive reading.
Perhaps it is so fascinating because we know from our own experience just how fragile
relationships can be. The careless word or the selfish act can suddenly sour what seemed to be a
secure friendship or trusting romance. When such a relationship breaks down, it can sometimes
never be regained. Some then see the need to justify their side of the story, either with friends or
in print.
I find it interesting, therefore, that, along with many other religious teachers, Jesus stresses the
importance of forgiveness over and over again.
